PetsEar Infections in Dogs
Do you usually see your dog shaking its head or scratching its ears? If yes, it must be suffering from ear infections. Ear infection is a common health problem for most dogs. You may not notice the problem until it becomes unbearable for your dog. Dog ear infection can be caused by various factors. It could be due to ear mites, bacterial infections, harmful environment, and improper dog hygiene. This kind of infection calls for medical attention. Veterinarians should be involved when dealing with ear infections in dogs. It is important to treat the infection as soon as you see the signs so as not worsen the dog’s condition. A sure sign of ear infection is when your dog used to love being scratched behind the ears but now shies away from you when you reach for its ears. Another sign is when your dog has an unusually bad odor even after a bath and its ears have dirt. In this case, it probably isn’t dirt in the dog’s ears. It is probably a build-up of ear wax which most likely causes the mysterious smell your dog emits. To remove the build-up, clean your dog’s ears gently by using cotton balls. Dip the cotton in ear cleaning solution which can be bought from the vet’s office. Ear mites can also cause ear infection. You can buy anti-mite or anti-flea powders and sprinkle them on your dog after bathing. This protects your dog from mites because of its special formulation. Also, make sure that your dog’s ears are dry after every bath. Keep the inner ear dry as well. Water trapped inside can cause infection. Oftentimes, antibiotics or ear drops are prescribed by vets. The right procedure mainly depends on what caused the ear infection. Some infections may even be contagious so, as much as possible, make sure the infected dog does not associate with other dogs. The most important way to prevent ear infections is to make sure that your dog has regular check-up with the vet in order to ensure good hygiene. Avoid using over-the-counter remedies unless approved by your vet. Some remedies may cause more damage to your dog’s ears instead of treating the infection. Preventive care and maintenance is essential in order to make sure that your pet is in good health. You can talk about...
